In order to apply to the 1Pet1Vet Service Dog Program, you will need to do the following:
Complete the online questionnaire on this site
Tender a copy of your DD-214 with an honorable discharge
Tender a letter from your health care provider stating that you have a PTSD diagnosis, that you are currently in treatment, and that a dog would be beneficial and is "medically necessary"
Complete the orientation meeting and your application packet
Attend one-on-one interviews with a 1Pet1Vet staff member and our Trainer, Peggy Moran
Applicants must be prepared to attend class twice a week for 18-24 months. For this reason, we must restrict ourselves to those residing within 50 miles of our training facility in Manteno, IL.
Due to the great demand for our limited program slots, attendance and training compliance is strictly enforced.
About 40% of our Veterans enter the program with their own dogs. They must first be evaluated for suitability by our Trainer along with being current on all of their vaccinations.
The majority start out with a specially selected, purpose bred puppy hand picked from known bloodlines. This is done to ensure the greatest possible likelihood that the dog can achieve full service dog status.
